Disabled Facilities Grant
Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs) are provided by local councils in England to help disabled people adapt their homes to make them more accessible, safe, and allow people to live independently within their home. Several projects used DFG’s as part of their renovation funding.
One project shares:
For us, the key was a good Occupational Therapist who is onboard with what you are doing, ours was a real advocate, who guided us down the right path. Building relationships is key, inviting the DFG team to the house and keeping in contact with them. We were a bit different because no one had done this before locally so they were unsure about how to move forward but we had a clear vision. Form filling was relatively easy and they offered to help with that. The difficult bit was the full breakdown of costs as this took builders time to do and was hard to get quotes for. The OT pushed to get the full amount. Because the whole house was being made accessible, we could think outside the box and gave us a chance to be more flexible. Our experience with them was extremely good – probably easiest service we worked with
