Key Conclusions

Finally, we asked the projects what advice they would give families thinking of setting up their own supported living.

"Its really hard, you have to stick it out for the essentials and priorities for a happy life"

When you are optimistic and driven by a vision it is hard to accept that some things will not go as you wish or plan. Most things in life are a mixture of success and failure. ‘good enough’ really can be good enough. Don’t be thrown off course by occasional unwelcome happenings. They will soon drop into perspective and be overtaken be positives.
I would approach it as building blocks, it isn’t all going to come together at once – you also want to know what care hours you are working with at the start so you know what that will mean for the group.
Advice I would give – start early, especially if you have a date you need to meet – it takes much longer than expected. Find good people to work with and agree what you want together. Approach housing associations and support providers so they know what you are looking to do and can help, and make sure you look at what area you want to be in.
I think its important to have a list of what’s important to the group and make sure everyone is compatible with that
Firstly, try and do everything you can for your family don’t ever give up, there are decent people out there who are willing to help, as we found 100% with JMS, You will receive negativity and NO as answers at times, but keep plugging away.
